Everyone in Nigeria has been urged to refrain from taking any action that can trigger another civil war in the nation. During a courtesy call by former chairs of the disbanded Congress for Progressive Change. The president emphasized that authorities must continue to work to uphold the nation’s unity and oneness.

On Tuesday, August 9, President Muhammadu Buhari issued a warning against behaviors like conceit that he claimed sparked Nigeria’s three-year civil conflict. Speaking to former state chairs of the disbanded Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) at the State House in Abuja, the president claimed that more than a million people died in Nigeria between 1967 and 1970, the duration of the conflict.

Also mentioned was the need to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the nation.

He declared, in his own words: “We are people. I can promise you that while we do have our flaws, our patriotism is something we have worked for. Since January 15th, 1966, we have experienced all of the difficulties. You understand what I mean when I say that we committed one million self-slaughtering acts to preserve the unity of this nation.

Everybody must do their part to ensure that Nigeria remains a single nation, the president pleaded with everyone. There cannot possibly be any more practical experience, he said. We are Nigerians and, with God’s help, we will continue to be so.
